Short-Term Rentals: Better Policies, Better Community
Limitation of property use is a tricky subject with the expansion of the #sharingeconomy. My intended message didn't fully get conveyed but I had an opportunity yesterday to share some strategies for municipalities to consider as it relates to the upcoming rework of short term rental laws in unincorporated Jefferson County. Check out this story with CBS that aired yesterday:
With sensible regulation and responsible owners, I sincerely believe that there is a middle ground where home sharing and concerned members of the community can get along just fine! Technologies like noise monitoring, exterior surveillance, wifi monitoring, and types of insurance are just a few examples of things that can be implemented to address the concerns around unruly guests that party all night or concerns for wildfire and/or interaction with wildlife. Many of these concerns are valid and are no different than the challenges that come up with traditional landlord/ tenant relationships. If a landlord stays involved, protects their assets and enforces their house rules, sharing homes (owner occupied or not) is something that can be done responsibly. Just like sharing vehicles with Lyft, Turo and Uber, sharing a home is another way for people to afford the life they wish to live without burdening others or infringing on property rights. There's still time to weigh in on this topic for unincorporated Jefferson County, who will be revamping their laws and processes in the coming months! Join the virtual meeting on Sept 12th at 3pm to give your feedback and share what is important to you as it relates to property rights!
